What does our thought come when we hear the word – “Rube“. Either we think of an awkward unsophisticated person or someone so naive or inexperienced.
But I got the thought of Rube Goldberg Machine. Let’s have a tour of my thought, trust me it’s gonna be funny and interesting too.
But before that, we are gonna have a look on a person- Rube Goldberg. He is an American cartoonist, author, engineer and an inventor. He has a big full name – Reuben Garrett Lucius Goldberg.
He is basically known for his Rube Goldberg Machine.
Rube Goldberg Machine
This is a complex machine. It consist of series of devices that perform simple tasks and gives a domino effect where one effects the other and at last the final task is done. Apparently, the task is really simple which is basically done in a complex way or you can say a way too indirectly.
Let’s have a look to one of the most famous Rube Golberg Machine – “Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin”
The “Self-Operating Napkin” gets activated when a soup spoon (A) is raised to mouth, pulling the string (B), thereby jerking ladle (C), which throws biscuit (D) that past the parrot(E). Parrot jumps after the biscuit and the perch (F) tilts, upsetting seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail pulls cord (I), which opens and ignites lighter (J), setting off skyrocket (K) that causes sickle (L) to cut string (M), allowing pendulum with attached napkin to swing back and forth, thereby wiping chin.
Funny huh! Easily one can wipe his own chin rather it brilliantly used the devices to wipe off.
Let’s find few more of them:-
Automatic scratch machine
There are lots of competition takes place worldwide for this Rube Golberg Machine design worldwide and there are lots of the similar devices.
Also there are artist who can exceptionally hold this exceptional machine idea in their brain and they do achieve fame for them.
Worldwide artist with similar idea
Austria-Franz Gsellmann worked for decades on a machine that he named the Weltmaschine
India-The humorist and children’s author Sukumar Ray, in his poem “Abol tabol“, had a character with a Rube Goldberg-like machine called “Uncle’s contraption”(khuror kol)
Denmark-Storm P maskiner (“Storm P machines”)
Japan-“Pythagorean devices” or “Pythagoras switch”.
United Kingdom-Heath Robinson contraption

And there are lots more.
But all are interesting and funny but made with great intelligence.
